Our long nightmare is over. We finally know Mrs. Butterworth's first name.
Guessing her first name -Joy - were 15 year-old Shayla Doty Of Indiana and 44 year-old Cynthia Harmon Of Illinois. Both win $500 and a year's supply of syrup.
The story behind Mrs. Butterworth's name began as many naming stories do - with the common husband and wife debate over naming their newborn. The father-to-be, Mr. Butterworth, was in favor of the name Yvonne, while the mother-to-be felt she was more deserving of a name that would remind them of what a precious jewel she would be - Opal. Having not settled on a decision the day their baby girl arrived, the doctor suggested "Jocelyn," meaning "the merry one."
Daddy Butterworth suggested combining the first letter from all three names, J-O-Y.
I know, now you want to know her mother and father's names. Well forget it.
Back to our story. Growing up, Mrs. Butterworth was teased by classmates who called her "Joy Buzzerworth" in reference to a popular practical joke item called a joy buzzer that shocked people when they shook hands.
I guess you had to be there.
Anyway, she had bad feelings about her first name and kept it a secret when they launched her syrup preferring the courtesy title with her last name.
I know, you are wondering how was she Mrs. Anything in grammar school. Me too.
But that's the tale of Mrs. Butterworth.
