What a perfect time to enjoy a salad but I'm begging you, don't just go for iceberg lettuce. It might offer crunch but there's no flavor there and you'll find yourself drenching it with dressing to add taste.
Look for greens you don't know and introduce yourself.
Carolyn LaPointe who runs Glocester Greens and Goats
taught me all about the amazing array of tastes available when I visited her farm a few years back. She's still at it, she told me yesterday. Only now she is growing even more and packaging enough of her gourmet salad mix to satisfy demand. And she has hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9-5 there at 1535 Snake Hill Rd., Glocester. (401) 567-8872
Right now her mix includes parcel, arugula, mizuna, romaine, sorrel, mustard greens and root beer plant. Pat a goat for me while you are there.
If Glocester isn't convenient, buy some fabulous greens at a Farmers' Market this weekend. Check out the list at Farm Fresh RI for one near you.
